BPI Discourage Clients To Post Bank Details In Social Media

BPI Warns Clients Not To Post Bank Information, Details In Social Media

The Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI) warned and told the public to refrain from posting their bank details in the social media.

On Wednesday (June 07, 2017), BPI has discouraged its clients from posting their bank details and information in the social media to avoid being a victim of identity theft and anomalous cash withdrawals.

BPI senior vice president Cathy Santamaria said that the issue regarding the unauthorized debits and credits of their client’s bank accounts were currently trying to resolve by country’s third-largest lender.

“Please do not post, do not put your account (details online). Do not reply to any email that’s asking you for information,” said by Santamaria quoted by ABS-CBN.

Screenshots and photos of transactions receipts and online banking portal have been discovered by the authorities from their client’s posts in the social media. The discovery came after BPI’s system glitch.

The system glitch was discovered on early Wednesday morning when some of BPI clients noticed that their accounts credited and debited at least twice for the past transactions due to an internal data processing error.

Santamaria also explained the incident was not a hack, but it was an internal issue occurred last Tuesday night (June 06, 2017). She also asked their clients to be patient and they will immediately fix the issue before the end of the day.

Senator Grace Poe also released a statement during the regular Kapihan at Manila Bay forum in Malate, Manila. Poe said that she trust the institution because of its track records.

Poe concluded that it might be only an internal data error, which caused the discrepancies on the client’s bank account balances.
