In the report of the Inquirer Net, almost three years ago, Buenaventura received an award as recognition for his unique teaching strategies when discussing Math.

His journey being a teacher in a foreign country is quite tough.

Due to the increasing number of teachers retiring from the said field of career, the Department of Education of the New York City created a program called “International Teachers” which has a high demand on teachers that has specializations in English, Math, Science and Special Education.

Before his working visa was given to him, he underwent a seminar for several months, an interview and paid for the initial fee to become a part of the agency.

And, he finally got the job. He was one of the 169 Filipino teachers who got the job.

Ramil arrived at New York on 2003 and got accepted at the IS912 in Queens and transferred later on at the Renaissance Charter School.

As mentioned on the stated report, he actually got culture shock. He indicated, “Culture was different from what we see on books and movies. We have to be careful as we don’t know if the practice we do in the Philippines is accepted here or not.  For example: I was staring at my students. For the Filipinos it means “makuha ka sa tingin”or they need to behave. All I got is ‘Why are you lookin’ at me? What you lookin at?’

However, despite the vast difference in terms of culture, Ramil is satisfied with his job. He gets to inspire his students and most importantly, he had made solving Math problems looked cool and easy for his students.
