5 Smartphone Apps That Can be Used to Detect Earthquakes

Smartphones can now be used to detect earthquakes through the uses of apps.

Applications or apps that can be used as earthquake detectors are now available on iOS and Android.

Here are the 5 smartphone apps that can be used to warn users of earthquakes according to Philstar.

1. Earthquake Alert!

This app records the latest land movement around the world as recorded by USGS or United States Geological Survey.

2. MyShake

This app developed by University of California, Berkeley in February 2016 has the capacity to analyze whether the motion detected is an earthquake or not through an accelerometer. It can detect jolts as much as magnitude 5 or a quake with a span of more than 10km.

3. Earthquake Tsunami Pro

Available only in iOS, this app provides information on earthquake and tsunami risk.

4. Earthquake Monitor

This app is intended also for iOS users. It can provide a warning regarding the earthquake’s magnitude and distance from the current location of the user.

5. Earthquake! Lite

This app is based on 18 earthquake data sources such as the USGS, EU Mediterranean Earthquake Centre, China Earthquake Center, Japan Meteorological Agency, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) and etc. This app is only available for iOS users only.

Meanwhile, residents of Metro Manila and other nearby provinces has been warned regarding the possible occurrence of “The Big One,” which is generated by the West Valley Fault. The quake reportedly has a magnitude of 7.2.

West Valley Fault runs through different parts of Metro Manila including Bulacan, Quezon City, Marikina, Makati, Pasig, Taguig and Muntinlupa in Metro Manila; San Pedro, Biñan, Sta. Rosa, Cabuyao and Calamba in Laguna; and Carmona, General Mariano Alvarez and Silang in Cavite.
