Surigao City Mayor Ernesto Matugas said that the city needed at least 3 years to fully recover from the effect of the magnitude 6.7 earthquake.

A magnitude 6.7 earthquake devastated Surigao last February 2017, which causes damaged properties and injured some residents. It also caused trauma and fear to some residents, after the news about ‘Big One’ make rounds in the social media.

Mayor Matugas appealed to the national government to immediately process the funds needed by the province to complete all the construction and repair for the damaged establishments and infrastructures in Surigao.

President Duterte said during his visit after Surigao has been struck by a magnitude 6.7 earthquake promised to donate an amount of P2 billion, according to Matugas. “I understand that there are procedures to be followed before the promised aid of the President will be released,” said by Matugas quoted by Politics.

Bridges, government building, roads, seaport, houses, establishments, airport, and other major infrastructures were damaged by the quake in the province. Around 6, 093 were partially damaged and 403 houses were totally damaged by the quake, according to the data released by the local government of Surigao.

An estimated 26, 00 residents of Surigao City were directly affected by the powerful tremor. The total damage cost of the magnitude 6.7 earthquake was estimated amounting P1.7 billion, including private and public properties, and infrastructures, according to Matugas.
