NIA chief resigned for amid corruption allegations.
Manila, Philippines – Former Duterte campaign spokesperson Peter Laviña has resigned as National Irrigation Administration (NIA) chief.
Laviña has reportedly resigned as the NIA chief on Wednesday, March 1, 2017, for amid corruption allegations.
In a lengthy Facebook post of Laviña, he said that there have been reports to discredit him but these allegations are supposedly unfounded.
He thanked President Rodrigo Duterte for the brief opportunity to serve the Filipino people and denied the rumors that he asked money from NIA contractors.
“To spare the president from these embarrassing stories, particularly in these times of intensified attacks on him, I have quietly left the government,” he said.
Laviña wrote in his post that he resign in his position to spare President Duterte from embarrassing corruption allegations, which he denied.
Peter Laviña is one of the most trusted aides of President Duterte. He served as special assistant of President Duterte in Davao City, then ran and won as councilor of Davao City.
He hinted in his post the reason of his resignation may have something to do with the rumors accusing him of extortion.
Laviña insisted in his post that he did not betray the president.
“Thank you for the opportunity to serve the government, especially to President Rodrigo Duterte, whose trust I have never betrayed,” he wrote.
However, Laviña vowed in his post that he will continue working in other sectors of the society after his resignation.
“I will likely continue to do so in media, civil society, and the business the sector where I have been involved before,” Laviña wrote.
According to a report of ABS-CBN news, President Rodrigo Duterte mentioned in his previous speech last Friday, February 24, that he fired somebody from the government but he chooses not to mention any name.
