Migrante International offered prayers for the soul of Jakatia Pawa, an overseas Filipino worker who faced death penalty in Kuwait.
Undeniably, Filipinos scatter around the world as many opted to work abroad. There are lots of Filipinos who accepted to land for a job in other nations with the hope of earning well to give their families a brighter future.
They faced the reality of being away from their families and the risk of whatever awaits them outside their homeland. However, not everyone landed to a good situation in other nations.
While others were fortunate enough to land to well-paying jobs and kind employers, there were those who arrived in other places with no jobs that await them. Some even experienced hunger.
Meanwhile, aside from job opportunity issues, there is a more serious reality outside the Philippines. There were Filipinos outside the country who are greatly hoping that they can be freed and go home alive.
Recently, news reports broke in entailing that an OFW has faced death penalty in Kuwait. Jakatia Pawa has been hung to death.
Based on a recent video news report of ABS-CBN News, the OFW members of Migrante International offered prayers and lighted candles for the soul of Pawa. According to the news report, the group blames the government for the negligence of the case of Pawa.
Mic Catuira, Migrante International’s acting Secretary General, said that there is really something wrong. He cited that it is confusing that even the government felt surprised for what happened to Pawa.
The group currently monitor the cases of other OFWs abroad who are also on the death row. According to Catuira, the government should have already provided assistance since the arrest of a person.
He cited that the assistance could be a translator and lawyer who could aid the person in clearly stating his justification and defend himself or herself.
According to the spokesperson of Department of Foreign Affairs, Asec. Charles Jose, there are around 88 Filipino workers abroad who are on the death row.
It would be hard for the Philippines to appeal for the other cases in the death row as death penalty is being pushed here in the Philippines now according to another human rights group, the Amnesty International Philippines.
The Filipino workers abroad call for the government to do everything and prevent the death of other Filipino workers abroad.
