Letters Handwritten By Princess Diana Sold In A London Auction

One of the handwritten letters is describing her son Prince Harry being “constantly in trouble” in school

The letters handwritten by the late Princess Diana, including one revealing the young Prince Harry was “constantly in trouble”, were sold for £15,100, with an equivalents of $18,600 or 17,500 euros, at an auction in London on January 5, Thursday.

Among the six handwritten letters the princess of Wales sent to royal butler Cyril Dickman in 1980s and 1900s was a note describing how her eldest son Prince William showered his younger brother Harry with “an endless supply of hugs and kisses” when he was newborn.

The notes went on sale at Cheffins auction house in central London. The handwritten letters were private letters between a trusted butler and the members of the royal family.

In a note written five days after the birth of Harry in 1984, Diana described it as a “particularly happy time”, where William adored his little brother so much and spent the “entire time swamping Harry with endless supply of hugs and kisses”. She also said Prince William hardly let his parent near the infant Harry.

In another letter she wrote ahead of a 1992 trip to Asia, Princess Diana told Dickham that her boys were well and enjoying a board school but Harry was constantly in trouble.

The lot containing the revealing letter about Harry was sold for £2,400, which is more than double the £600 to £900 estimate.

Another note read, “We are off to Korea in November for a visit so a good place to do the Christmas shopping!”.

The complete collection, a total of 40 lots, include Christmas cards, a boxed piece of cake from the wedding of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip in 1947, and a note sent from the queen, garnered a total of £55,000.

Cyril Dickman was a well-respected person in Buckingham Palace before her retired in 1992, who helped Princess Diana deal with the death of her father also in that year.

Princess Diana wrote another letter to wish Dickman well in his retirement, where she told him that she will surely miss him. She also thanked Dickman for being so kind to her throughout the years. The princess of Wales wished Dickman to take care of himself and sent him love before he officially left the Palace.

Dickman died a decade after his retirement at the age of 85.
