Relief Goods Distribution Ceremony Skipped By President Duterte
On Tuesday (December 27, 2016), President Rodrigo Duterte has skipped the ceremonial giving of relief goods for Typhoon Nina’s victims in Camarines Sur.
Typhoon Nina devastated several areas in the country during the holiday. The government’s weather agency said that the typhoon has struck the Philippines for the first time during Christmas day for the past 65 years.
Nina was one of the strongest typhoon, which struck the country after Typhoon Haiyan (Yolanda) left the country and took the lives of almost 7, 300 people last 2013. The central Philippines was shocked by the typhoon during the weekends.
The president went to Camarines Sur on Tuesday to check the effects of Typhoon Nina on the province. Duterte assured the relief goods that will be distributed to the typhoon victims. But the president decided to skip the relief distribution ceremony and call it ‘corny’.
Duterte said that he was not into it, he doesn’t like being televised while distributing relief goods to the victims. Those kinds of stuff feel corny to him. He said that they brought the relief goods in the province and it will be distributed by local disaster unit officials.
He also said that he will not be the one to distribute the goods for he doesn’t like dramatically giving gifts. He said that it’s not his job anymore to distribute the goods because he has another job to be accomplished.
The president also explained that the fund used for relief goods distribution came from the government and not from him that’s why he did not lead symbolic distribution of relief goods for the typhoon victims.
Duterte was also visiting other provinces ravaged by the Typhoon during the weekend. The president will also provide assistance to the affected areas and hopes for the fast recovery of the areas.
