Bangsamoro Basic Law Pushed By President Duterte

Duterte expressed his disappointment to his rivals in the May elections failed to make Mindanao a priority which is why he wants to pass the Bangsamoro Basic Law.

President Rodrigo Duterte said on Monday, November 7, that he wants the Bangsamoro Basic Law to hurdle in the Philippine Congress quickly.

In his speech after inking the executive order expanding the Bangsamoro Transition Commission, Duterte expressed his disappointment that his rivals in the May elections failed to make Mindanao, his homeland, a priority.

He said that he was appalled that nobody among other presidential aspirants was talking about Mindanao and the problems the southern island is facing.

Bangsamoro Basic Law
Duterte claims that he was the only presidential candidate who talked about Mindanao during the campaign.

Duterte also said that other presidential bets focused on infrastructure projects and other programs but never made mention of any plans for Mindanao.

“I was the only one talking about it because the rest of the guys without due respect never knew any single issue about Mindanao either they did not know about it or just pretended not to talk about it. Maybe for fear…. to alienate the others or not also frank enough to admit that there is a problem which we have to solve”, the Chief Executive said.

The 16th President of the Republic said that if no one will stand for peace in Mindanao, the Philippines is yet to face another round of almost 45 years of fighting, which he described as a tragedy.

He emphasized that it is the primary reason he is pushing for the enactment of the Bangsamoro Basic Law, which will create a new autonomous area that will have more powers than the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) that it is supposed to replace.

The bill was pushed but failed to get numbers in the 16th Congress due to questions on its constitutionality.
