Duterte Urges ASEAN, Unite Against Crime
President Rodrigo Duterte recently pointed out the need for the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) to unite in fighting transnational crime and to support small businesses, 13th ASEAN Business and Investment Summit, held in Laos.
A report by Philstar said that Duterte said the ASEAN leaders to need to work as one in order continue the economic gains the Asian group has already attained.
“We should act together in concert to ensure that the economic gains we made so far will advance at full speed so that ASEAN can confidently play its rightful role as a global player contributing to the economic growth and prosperity,” Duterte said as quoted in the report.
Duterte pointed out the importance of the law crafted and implemented in bringing good governance and order to provide an environment that promotes the progress and prosperity of the country.
The President also pointed out that the regional group needs to resolve the crimes in each country which according to him is “one of the most difficult and complex problems” in the region.
He also stated that problem of the Philippines on illegal drugs, which he also considered to be a pressing problem in other countries.
Also, he called on the leaders of the regional group to double their efforts in countering terror1sm as it threatens the progress of a nation.
Recently, Duterte’s hometown, an incident happened in Davao City taking the lives of 14 people and left at least 60 people injured.
The security now is being heightened in most parts in the Philippines.
Duterte came to pay a visit to Davao City before going to the ASEAN Summit being held in Laos wherein he will also receive a recognition being the next chairman of the ASEAN in 2017.
