Greenland Sharks Can Live Up To Four Centuries Long

Greenland sharks are the planet’s longest living vertebrate that may live up to four centuries. In the waters of Arctic and North Atlantic these creatures can be found. They are big slow-moving deep ocean predator that has a life span of 400 years.

According to the scientist these sea creatures liver for very long period of time because of its very stagnant rate of growth. Greenland sharks grows for only 1cm a year this is one of the reason why they can live for so long as the researcher estimated for the first time the lifespan of the shark.

The lens of a shark’s eye analyzed by radiocarbon found out that the oldest 28 sharks studied were estimated 392 years. While other sharks about 95 percent are ranging 272 to 512 years old according to Julius Nielsen a Danish marine biologist.

He also said that the female cannot reach its sexual maturation until it reached the age of 134 years old. It is also belong to the largest carnivorous sharks in the world with 18 feet or 5.5 meters long.
