Perfecto Yasay accepts Duterte’s offer to be DFA chief.

Perfecto Yasay, former chairman of Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has accepted the offer of President-elect Rodrigo Duterte to be the acting secretary of Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA).

Based upon the report of ABS-CBN News, the post was initially offered to Duterte’s running-mate, Sen. Alan Peter Cayetano. However, he have to wait for one year before he assume the post.

Cayetano, who lost in the vice-presidential race has three years left in the senate.

In a press conference on Monday, Duterte shared that Perfecto “Kidlat” Yasay was his roommate when he was studying law in San Beda College. Yasay, on the other hand was taking up law in the University of the Philippines.

Like Duterte, Yasay has roots in Mindanao. He hails from Kidapawan, Cotabato- where the dispersal happened. He was able to complete in  Davao City High School his secondary education.

The 69-year-old lawyer became SEC chairman under the administration of former President Joseph Estrada. In 1993, he was appointed by President Fidel Ramos as SEC associate commissioner and in 1995 to 2000, he was appointed as chairman.

In 2010, Yasay ran as vice president of evangelist Bro. Eddie Villanueva under Bangon Pilipinas party. However, they both lost.

Yasay also aimed for senatorial slot via Senator Raul Roco’s party, Aksyon Demokratiko but he lost in the election in 2001.

Perfecto Yasay will assume the DFA chairmanship from Secretary Jose Almendras.
