Migrante Tells Duterte To Keep His Promises To OFWs
A pro-migrants group Migrante recently urged the incoming President Rodrigo Duterte to come up with policies unlike what the Aquino administration did and to prevent forced migration.
According to an open letter by Migrante International, they wanted that the new government will depart from the mistakes of the previous administration’s “tuwid na daan”.
“We want a new government that will depart from all the failures and empty promises of the so-called ‘tuwid na daan’,” a statement from the open letter.
They also said that they will hold to the promise of presumptive President Rodrigo Duterte to put the Overseas Filipino Workers (OFW) in the top priorities of the Duterte administration.
“We will hold you to your promise to make OFWs your top-most priority in your labor agenda. We want new leaders who will be nurturing to OFWs and their families.”
The group added that they wanted to a new government that will uphold and protect their rights and welfare.
Migrante also called on Duterte to solve the factors that force Filipinos to world abroad including corruption, labor export policy, unemployment, contractualization, and the lack of basic social services.
The group also called on the attention of Duterte regarding the case of Mary Jane Veloso to provide legal assistance as Veloso is still in Indonesia, together with other Filipinos having the same problems abroad.
They also wanted to remove the Overseas Employment Certificate (OEC) as it becomes, according to the group, a “legal kotong”.
“We dream of a society where families will need not be broken by the need to survive. We wish to come home to a country where there are opportunities for everyone to live decent and humane lives,” the statement ended.
