Atty. Panelo: Sen. Trillanes Didn’t Sign an Affidavit During BPI Julia Vargas Meeting

Atty. Salvador Panelo belied the claim of Sen. Antonio Trillanes IV that his client, Davao City Mayor and the leading presidential candidate Rodrigo Duterte, the lawyer also noted during an interview with GMA News that Sen. Trillanes never sign an affidavit during the BPI Julia Vargas meeting between Trillanes and Duterte camps.

The lawyer of Mayor Duterte noted further that the Davao City Mayor did not possess the controversial P211 million in his deposit account at the Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI) Julia Vargas Branch in Pasig City.

In an interview with GMA News’ “News To Go,” Atty. Panelo was quoted as saying “I have addressed the bank to issue the necessary documents. Based on the records of the bank, walang P211 million sa kanyang deposit mula pa noong ito’y binuksan niya at hanggang ngayon,” Panelo said.

Atty. Panelo is representing the camp of Mayor Duterte in a face-off with Sen. Trillanes at the Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI). The lawyer revealed that he was authorized by Mayor Duterte to open his bank account and release a bank certification that the PDP-Laban standard-bearer never amassed P211 million.

During the meeting with Sen. Trillanes Atty. Panelo dared the senator to issue a sworn statement regarding his allegations and if the senator, believes his evidence against Duterte was true.

“Ayaw niyang maglagda ng isang sinumpaang salaysay dahil puwedeng siyang idemanda,” Panelo said.

Sen. Trillanes should be the one to prove the existence of the money, not Duterte, since bank secrecy laws prohibit banks and its personnel to reveal account details of its clients, according to the laywer.

A waiver of bank secrecy law and other documents will belie the allegations against Duterte, the lawyer noted.
