Anil Jadhav, 30, was arrested Monday for snatching the 63,000 rupee (S$1,316) necklace from a 52-year-old woman in Mumbai’s Sion area.

The initial body search done by the police failed to retrieve the item which weighed 25 g.

But X-ray scans of Jadhay’s body showed that the necklace was lodged at his food pipe.

With this case, police then put him on the special diet of bananas and liquids.

“We searched him thoroughly in the police station but did not find the necklace. Then some people who had caught him told us that they had seen him swallowing something,” police official Rahul Pawar was quoted telling the BBC.

The necklace has since been turned to its owner after Jadhay has defecated it the used of fed special liquids and bananas.

The owner, however, told the Midday newspaper correspondent that she refused to wear it and was having it melted instead to re-make it.

The special diet has been used by Indian police on robbers with the same cases.

In 2007, police also forced a thief to gobble down at least 40 bananas to pass out a gold necklace that he had stolen and swallowed, following last year’s case that also led police to force another thief to eat 36 bananas to retrieve a stolen item.
