Apollo 14 Astronaut’s Backpack Strap Sells $41K

After it was used by an Apollo 14 astronaut as he moved around the surface of the moon in 1971, a backpack strap has sold at auction for nearly $42,000 in Boston.

RR Auction, Massachusetts-based, said that the strap used and brought back by Edgar Mitchelle as a souvenir of the missions raised to $41,806 this week.

Meanwhile, the buyer’s identity was not revealed.

After spending almost 9½ hours on the moon surface, Mitchell left the life support backpack before returning to Earth to save weight and offset the moon rocks he needed to bring back with him.

The National Air and Space Museum in Washington meanwhile houses the suit the astronaut wore.
