ABS-CBN’s “Failon Ngayon” Wins International Awards for Typhoon Coverage

ABS-CBN’s current affairs program “Failon Ngayon” wins the top prize at an international awards ceremony held in London, England, for the special coverage of the world’s most devastating typhoon last 2013, super typhoon Haiyan, locally known as “Bagyong Yolanda.”

The show hosted by Ted Failon, “Failon Ngayon” was awarded with Best Domestic Current Affairs Documentary for Television at this year’s Association for International Broadcasting (AIB)Awards held in London.

Kapamilya newscaster and the show’s host together with his team witnessed firsthand the devastating impact of the strongest storm in the history of Philippines and considered as one of the most devastating typhoon that hit a certain country in the world.

According to the judges composed of international jury, they praised he program for its “great immediacy and narrative coherence,” in telling a story that “would stay in the mind for a long time.”

The show “Failon Ngayon” bested tough competition in its category which included Channel 4 (UK, Dispatches: Breadline Kids), BBC (UK, Spotlight: Guns and Government), Antena 3 (Spain, The Way They Steel), Voice of America (USA, John F. Kennedy: A Legacy Remembered), and E.Sat TV (South Africa, Suidlanders: Preparing for a Revolution).

Meanwhile, the AIB Chief Executive Simon Spanswick described “Failon Ngayon” as a “worthy winner,” of the competition which is known worldwide.

Aside from ABS-CBN’s “Failon Ngayon,” the Kapamilya Channel received further nominations in two other categories, the educational program “Matanglawin,” hosted by Kuya Kim Atienza that received a nomination in Children’s Factual Program.

Ted Failon was also shortlisted for International Television Personality of the Year, alongside CNN’s Christiane Amanpour, Fox International’s Kiran Jethwa, Deutsche Welle’s Pia Castro, and CNN’s Richard Quest, who won the title for his show “Quest Means Business.”
