The Philippine team featuring Filipino math wizards won a total of 18 medals in the recently concluded 2014 Wizards at Mathematics International Competition (WIZMIC), held last October 18 to 21, 2014 in Lucknow, Northern India. The Filipinos bagged a total of two gold medals in the world-renowned math competition.
Most of the students who represent the Philippine flag came from Metro Manila, 16 of them were senior primary students. Aside from the two gold medals the Filipinos won, they also bagged 13 silvers and three bronzes in the 12-nation competition where the Philippines placed third overall. Host team India placed fourth overall in the competition featuring countries like Iran, Vietnam, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Nepal, Nigeria, Sri Lanka and South Africa.
The 2014 Wizmic was topped by teams from Thailand and Indonesia with 16 and 13 gold medals respectively. The announcement of the Philippines winning third place overall came from Dr. Simon Chua, the president of the non-government organization, Mathematics Trainers’ Guild-Phils. (MTG). He was also the head of the Philippine Math delegation competing in India.
According to a news report posted by Philippine Daily Inquirer, the country’s gold medal was courtesy of Jose Lorenzo Abad, a Grade 6 student from the Colegio San Agustin-Makati and Aiman Andrei Kue, a Grade 5 student from Zamboanga Chong Hua High School in Zamboanga City.

Silver Medalists: Andrei Lenard Chan and Stephen James Ty, both from Zamboanga Chong Hua High School; Jhervey Edric Cheng from Chiang Kai Shek College; Kristin Angela Narag from Colegio San Agustin-BiƱan; Audrey Gabrielle Tan from St. Peter The Apostle School; Wesley Gavin Palomar from Falcon School; Jodi Marcia Arcadio from Notre Dame of Metro Manila; Hiraya Marcos from Philippine Cultural College; Gregory Charles Tiong from St. Jude Catholic School, and Casey Jules Uygongco from Hua Siong College of Iloilo.
Bronze Medalists: Jose Oliver Narvasa from Notre Dame of Metro Manila and Jannica Allison Lim from Zamboanga Chong Hua High School. The Filipinos also garnered three silvers and a bronze in the Team contest.
