Philippine Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) confirmed that a Magnitude 6.1 earthquake hit Davao Occidental on Monday, July 14, 2014 at round 4:00 p.m. The quake was recorded 88 kilometers (55 miles) southeast of the coastal town of Don Marcelino in Davao Occidental.
Here’s the intensity reports released by Phivolcs:
- Intensity IV- Governor Generoso, Davao Oriental
- Intensity III- Glan, Sarangani; Mati City; Davao City; Don Marcelino and Malita, Davao Occidental
- Intensity II- Gen. Santos City; Digos City
- Intensity I- M’lang, North Cotabato; Koronadal and Tupi, South Cotabato
According to Phivolcs, Intensity VI is “strong earthquake and are accompanied by local damages near the epicenters. First class seismological stations can observe them wherever they occur within the earth.”
Phivolcs noted that the 6.1 Davao Occidental earthquake was tectonic in origin and it struck at a depth of oo8 kilometers. There are expected aftershocks but no immediate damage reported as of press time.
Phivolcs advise the public earlier to be updated on the intensities and possible aftershocks produced by the earthquake.
Based upon the latest earthquake information of Phivolcs, the Davao Occidental Magnitude 6.1 earthquake has recorded a magnitude 4.9 aftershock in Don Marcelino, Davao Occidental as well at around 4:40 p.m.
“It is not alarming,” Davao Occidental chief government seismologist Renato Solidum told ABS-CBN News and other members of the press.
