DepEd Approved 1,299 Private Schools’ Tuition Fees Increase for AY 2014-2015

The Department of Education (DepEd) of the Republic of the Philippines approved a total of 1,299 private schools to increase their tuition fees up to 35% for the Academic Year 2014-2015 as confirmed by a news report posted by GMA News.

According to DepEd Assistant Secretary Tonisito Umali, he assured to the public that the decision to approve the tuition fee hike of private elementary and high schools in the Philippines has gone through proper consultation process.

DepEd noted that majority of the private schools that were allowed increase on their tuition fees came from Western Visayas region or Region 6 with a total of 311 schools, Region 1 has 246 schools while in Metro Manila has 172 private schools allowed for tuition fee increase.

The report also noted that at least 11 private schools in the Yolanda-hit areas in Eastern Visayas were allowed to increase their tuition fees.

Meanwhile the country’s agency for colleges, the Commission on Higher Education has yet to decide on the petition to increase tuition fees in some private colleges and universities in the country.
Based upon CHED previous reports, the commission approved around 10 to 15 percent of colleges and universities in the Philippines increase their tuition fees every year.
