The San Mig Coffee Mixers defeated the Talk ‘N Text Tropang Texters in Game 1 of the PBA Commissioner’s Cup Finals held on Friday night, May 9, 2014 at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum with the final score at 95-80 victory. The win of the Coffee Mixers ends the 13-game winning streak of the formerly undefeated Tropang Texters.
The Game 1 of the Best-of-Five Finals series in the 2014 PLDT Home TVolution Commissioner’s Cup features two of the most promising PBA teams this year. San Mig Coffee Mixers proved once and for all that they were indeed of championship caliber as they will try to continue their finals streak after winning the last two PBA title.
The Coffee Mixers displayed more energy in Game 1 despite coming off a tough five-game series against the Air21 express during the semis while the Tropang Texters were just relaxed coming off a long rest after sweeping Rain or Shine in their own semis match-up.
The first half of the San Mig vs. Talk ‘N Text Game 1 featured a tight match but the Mixers broke the game wide during the third quarter of the game to the extent that they managed a 17-point game advantage.
San Mig also rested their import James Mays in the third period but even though without their reinforcements the Mixers was able to secure a double-digit lead heading into the final quarter of Game 1.
Former PBA MVP James Yap led the Coffee Mixers with 17 points while Jayson Castro of the Talk ‘N Text Tropang Texters led his wards with 17 points also on their losing effort against San Mig Coffee.
The Game 2 of the PBA Commissioner’s Cup Finals will be held this coming Sunday, May 11, 2014 at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum at around 5:00 PM.
