The Ilocos Norte First District Representative Rodolfo “Rudy” Fariñas experienced the “selfie of his life” with no less than the highest official of the Roman Catholic Church, Pope Francis, right after the canonization of Pope John Paul II and Pope John XXIII at the Saint Peter’s Square, Vatican City on Sunday.
The “selfie photo” of the 62-year-old Rudy Fariñas received mixed reactions among netizens after it was posted on his official Instagram account. The congressman from Ilocos Norte visited Vatican City as a member of the Philippine delegation to the canonization, headed by Philippine Ambassador to the Holy See Mercedes Tuason.
Most of social media users and close friends of the Congressman commented how “blessed” and “lucky” the Congressman for being able to come close to Pope Francis and even scored a selfie with one of the most popular Pope of our time.
Although there are positive comments with the gesture of Cong. Farinas, when a video taken by Italy’s Repubblica TV, netizens reacted negatively with how the Congressman got the selfie. Some netizens reacted negatively when they saw that the congressman took the selfie while Pope Francis was shaking hands with the Philippine Ambassador.

Congressman Farinas is known in the Ilocos Province as one of the veteran politician, he became Laoag City’s youngest Mayor at age 28 during the year 1980, serving six years. He also became the Governor of Ilocos Norte for 10 years and congressman for one temr (1998-2001).
Despite his previous bad background image, Farinas was recognized in the House of Representative during the year 2010 as one of the 43 solons who had perfect attendance in the Lower House.
Some social media users were quick to comment how “blessed” and “lucky” the congressman was for being able to come close to Pope Francis and even score a selfie.
