Wawrinka overpowered Djokovic, who gave him two setbacks in Melbourne and the US Open last year, to barge in the semi-finals after four hour of exchange, 2-6,6-4,6-2,3-6,9-7.
“I was really focused point after point. I had to stay aggressive, not to give up. I was tired, I was cramping a bit, I was nervous too. But
now I’m going to have an ice bath for a very long time, said Wawrinka. “Last year was really tough, this year it’s a
new year.”
Djokovic got first into a decider but tge Swiss opponent back and tied the match at 5-5. The former number one from Serbia stayed close until he failed to score with his crosscourt shot to draw another break in play that allows Wawrinka to a victory he will never forget.
