Philippines & Myanmar to Host the 2016 AFF Suzuki Cup

The Philippines and Myanmar were selected by the Asian Football Federation (AFF) to host the 2016 edition of the ASEAN Football Federation Suzuki Cup, the region’s most prestigious football competition featuring the best of the best in Southeast Asia.

The Philippine Football Federation believes the that regional competition will boost the football development in the country. The announcement of hosting venues was announced on Saturday during the AFF Council Meeting in Myanmar.

The PFF is now eyeing the Rizal Memorial Football Stadium in Manila and the Philippine Stadium in Bulacan, which is still under construction, as possiblem main venues for the 2016 AFF Suzuki Cup.

The hosting of the biennial AFF Suzuki Cup is the first time not only for the Philippines but also for Myanmar. The last time that the Philippine Azkals played their first home match was at the Rizal Stadium in the Suzuki Cup last year, the team settled for a nil-nil draw.

The 2016 AFF Championship will be the 11th edition of the biennial competition featuring the best football national teams in the region with host nation Myanmar and the Philippines.

The 2014 edition of the AFF Suzuki Cup will be co-hosted by Singapore and Vietnam, it will mark both nation’s fourth time hosting the tournament. Since the year 2002, the competition has been jointly-hosted by two nations.

The 2014 qualifying rounds of the AFF Suzuki Cup will be hosted by Laos.
