FIBA Asia 2013 Down to 15 Teams Revised Groupings

The FIBA Asia announced on Friday, July 19, that the 27th FIBA Asia Championship hosted by Manila, Philippines from August 1-11 will feature a total of 15 teams only following the final decision of FIBA for the suspension of Lebanon.

With the development, all members of the Group B will automatically moved up to the second round of competition as the three teams will compete against each other. Group B were composed of Japan, Qatar and Hong Kong.

According to FIBA Secretary General Hagop Khajirian, FIBA Asia were not able to find a suitable replacement for Lebanon’s suspension. He was quoted as saying that, The Lebanese NF has been suspended by FIBA as of July 11 with immediate effect. Going by the FIBA Internal Regulations no team or official from any of the suspended National Federations can participate in any FIBA competition,” Khaijirian stated.

He adds further that, “We tried our best to find a replacement team, but given the short period of time available we couldn’t find any,” FIBA Sec. Gen. Khajirian said. 

Here’s the Revised Groupings for 27th FIBA Asia Championship

Group A: Jordan, Chinese Taipei, Philippines, Saudi Arabia,

Group B: Hong Kong, Japan, Qatar.

Group C: China, Iran, Korea, Malaysia.

Group D: India, Bahrain, Kazakhstan, Thailand
