The province of Apayao is considered as a lanlocked province of the Republic of the Philippines, it belongs to the Cordillera Administrative Region in Northern Luzon. The recognized capital town of Apayao is Kabugao.
The province splits from the former Kalinga-Apayao single province for the purpose of better service needs of individual native tribes in both provinces. The May 2013 General Elections showcased Elias Bulut Jr. going up against Madin Almazan for the provincial governor post.
