Free Text to Philippines
SMS with GMail

A good news to the Filipino communities abroad who were always hooked up to the internet. GMail the e-mail service from the leading internet search engine company Google have just launched a service intended to bring more closer the Filipinos together. The GMail-to-SMS Service was launched by Google that will enable GMail users to send an SMS to Philippine mobile phone users.

The Philippines which was dubbed as the text messaging capital of the world with billions of SMS sent daily will be the major beneficiary for the service that was already launched in other countries but with limited access. GMail had announced that they will now include the three major Philippine Telecommunications Network namely Smart, Globe, and Sun Cellular.

The service works simply just like a chat service, the only different is that you have to input the mobile number of the person to whom you are chatting with. Unlike the GMail service that you can chat directly to your GMail contacts. The recipient can reply to the SMS you have sent and it will appear to the chat window.

Sending of SMS to Philippine based mobile phones is free of charge, however it will be limited only to a total of  50 SMS for 24 hours. The GMail sender of text message will have to wait for another 24 hours if the allotted number of SMS have been used already.

The only disadvantage of the service was for the recipient of the SMS sent via GMail. If they reply to the SMS from an e-mail they will be charged for P1 per SMS sent.

Myriam Boublil, head of communications and public affairs, Google Southeast Asia was quoted as saying “SMS in Gmail Chat will bring a new level of flexibility and mobility to Gmail users in the Philippines,” stated Boubil.

He further adds that, “With more than 70 million mobile subscribers in the Philippines and the country being the SMS capital of the world, we think this service will allow for seamless integration between mobile and PC communication and make it more convenient for Pinoys to send each other messages.” Boublil said.

The service will be a huge advantage to Overseas Filipino Workers who were always online, they can save the money that will be used in sending an SMS through the use of regular SMS service from the country in which they are residing. Filipinos have been used to the roaming service offered by the Philippine telcos which saved a lot of money. Now that the service from GMail have been all they need was a GMail account to saved for their text messaging expenses.
