On May 31, 2011 Twitter.com announced that they had launched the follow button for twitter accounts. They posted on their blog the following: “When you follow interesting accounts on Twitter, it’s easy to stay connected with what’s most meaningful to you. Today we’re excited to launch the Follow Button, a new way to discover and instantly follow Twitter accounts directly from the websites you visit everyday.” as written on their blog post.
Twitter was considered as one of the most visited site in the world even ranked at the top 10 most popular site according to the Alexa ranking. The social networking and microblogging sites which utilized the use of instant messaging or SMS or a Web interface.
With a population of over 200 million users according to the latest estimates as of March 2011, twitter had a wide reach, almost all celebrities had their own twitter accounts where fans can easily follow their tweets.
Twitter which was dubbed as the “SMS of the internet” was founded on June 2006 by Jack Dorsey but it was launched in July 2006. Another prominent names involved in the creation of one of the most successful internet companies were Evan Williams, Biz Stones, and Noah Gl(–foul word(s) removed–) all were considered as co-founders with Jack Dorsey.

Twitter had partnered with several prominent websites and celebrities on their first day of launch last May 31, 2011. Sites includes AOL.com, cbsnews.com, foxnews.com to name a few and celebrities like Justin Bieber, Jennifer Lopez and Lady Gaga.
