Thailand and Cambodia’s Border Conflict

 Thailand and Cambodia’s border conflicts have escalated for the past few days. The fighting that broke out on friday was the first reported clashes which resulted to fatalities. The skirmished took placed near the 900 year old Hindu Temple Priah Vihear. 

Priah Vihear was located near the disputed Thailand-Cambodia border. The Hindu Temple were claimed by both ASEAN countries for the past few years. Eventually in 1962, the World Court awarded the Temple to the Cambodian side. It was also declared by the United Nations as one of the World Heritage Site in 2008. 

According to Thai Army a Thai soldier was killed and four others have been wounded during the exchange of gunfire and artillery. In the Cambodian side they have reported with two fatalities and a death of a Thai villager. 

Both military officials from two side have blamed each others responsibility that resulted to casualty. The dispute have been fuelled by the continued protests lead by Thailand’s People’s Alliance for Democracy or Yellow Shirt. They urged the government of Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva to take a tougher stand on the issue of the Thailand-Cambodia Border. 

Priah Vihear: Hindu Temple

According to latest developments of Thailand and Cambodia’s Border Conflict. Both countries have agreed to a ceasefire on Saturday February 5, 2011. The fighting is a setback to the already volatile situation in the ASEAN Region. Ceasefire is necessary to promote peace and stability within the 10-member nation which the two countries belongs.
