During the competition, Philippines and Colombia were considered as the strongest contenders in the major beauty pageant. Philippines Bet Maxine Medina has large shoes to fill since the expectations are high for her. Many Filipinos were hoping that she could make the Philippines first back-to-back win for the country.

She was criticized for her apparent nervousness when answering questions that made some people think that she could lose in the question and answer portion.
