Pangilinan Orders A Probe On Escalation Of Fake News In Social Media

Sen. Pangilinan filed a resolution ordering a probe on the escalation of fake news online.

PANGILINAN – Senator Francis ‘Kiko’ Pangilinan filed Senate Resolution 271 which orders the appropriate Senate committees to launch an investigation on the escalation of fake news over the social media.

Recently, the social media is one of the fastest sources of news reports and updates. Undeniably, there are people who turn to the platform whenever they are looking for reports and updates.

On the social media, what you will see are not just personal posts of the netizens about what is going on with their lives. It is not just a home to personal photos and videos that might entertain the online community.

It is also a home to lots of news reports about the political arena, updates about the famous stars in the field of show business, and other major and minor news reports may it be within the country or internationally.

News reports and updates circulate rapidly over the platform. Shares have made it easier for the reports to reach more people and elicit more reactions. In fact, the commentary section of some posts could really tell how it evoked certain emotions on the people.

However, lately, the veracity of news reports circulating over the online platform has been one of the matters on top.

Recently, a news report in Inquirer stated that a resolution that orders the appropriate Senate committee to launch an investigation on the escalation of fake news and misinformation over the social media has been filed by Sen. Pangilinan.

Based on the news report, the said order is directed in Senate Resolution 271. The goal of launching an investigation is to know if amending Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012 or Republic Act 10175 is needed and as well as other laws that are related to the matter.

“It is therefore in the interest of the State to protect the integrity of cyberspace so that it will become a tool for development, and not a tool for sowing dissent and virulent tribalism,” Sen. Pangilinan stated in the resolution according to the report.

The report also entailed that the resolution filed by the Senator also emphasized the accountability of Facebook regarding the contents that it allow to circulate over the platform.

Furthermore, it is mentioned in the report that the said resolution aims to check on whether imposing sanctions on social media platforms could be possible.

Meanwhile, a resolution which seeks for a Senate probe to be launched regarding the growth of the ‘trolls’ over the online platform has been filed by Sen. Antonio Trillanes IV.
