Veteran comedian and Eat Bulaga host, Vic Sotto became the latest target of celebrity death hoax in the Philippines when a Facebook post titled “Paalam Vic Sotto” went viral online, not only on Facebook but also on micro-blogging site Twitter.
GMA Network already issued an official statement that Vic Sotto is still alive and was just a victim of online issue. Ms. Malou Ochoa-Fagar, the executive vice president of TAPE Inc., noted that the Facebook post is purely a lie and there’s no truth about Vic Sotto’s alleged death.
Although most tech-savvy netizens were convinced that the Facebook and Twitter post could contain spam or virus, some supporters and followers of Vic Sotto were worried with the said issue.
The post which was posted on Friday, July 25, 2014 features the photo of the 60-year-old comedian with the edited logo of Yahoo! News Philippines. A link was also posted in the said post, once click the video will open the website of www.gma-channelnews9.tk.
According to some experts in social media, one of them is Mc. Richard Paglicawan of TheDailypedia.com, he warned Facebook and Twitter users not to click the post, because it will be directed to a page that looks like Facebook which requires download that could spread the virus to thousands of users.
