Phivolcs Releases Latest Update on Bulusan Volcano (June 10)
The state volcanology agency Phivolcs recorded a total of 149 volcanic earthquakes in Bulusan Volcano in the past 24 hours.
On Friday (June 10, 2022), the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology released the latest update about Mount Bulusan. The seismology agency reported that Bulusan generates numerous quakes.
Phivolcs reported that Bulusan in Sorsogon generates around 149 volcanic earthquakes in the past 24 hours, which were quite higher compared to the five volcanic quakes on Thursday (June 9).
However, the volcano remains under alert level 1, which indicates a low level of unrest. Bulusan may also produce plumes, which may reach up to 100 meters tall and then drift northwest. The volcano reportedly emits about 824 tons of sulfur dioxide on Thursday.
Meanwhile, the volcanology agency prohibits the public to enter the four-kilometer radius of the Permanent Danger Zone. Residents are also prohibited into the Extended Danger Zone without vigilance.
The seismology agency also instructed the civil aviation authorities to warn pilots to avoid flying near the volcano’s crater due to the sudden steam-driven or phreatic eruptions.
“Most of these (seismic activities) were weak and shallow events, but may indicate that a phreatic eruption could possibly occur within the next few hours,” Phivolcs said.
A few days ago, Bulusan Volcano generates a steam-driven explosion, affecting several villages from the municipalities of Juban, Casiguran, and Irosin in Sorsogon province.
The incident displaced nearly 50 families or 180 individuals. The affected residents have been evacuated by the local government units after the eruption.
