PAZ LATORENA BIOGRAPHY – Here’s the biography and other details about writer, poet, editor, and teacher Paz Latorena.

Among the notable Filipino English writers, of the first generation, is Paz Latorena. She is also a writer, poet, editor, and teacher. She was born on January 17, 1908, in Boac, Marinduque, and the oldest among the ten children of Magda Manguera and Ricardo Latorena.

For her schooling, she attended St. Scholastica’s College in Manila for elementary, Manila South High School for secondary, and University of the Philippines (UP) in Manila where she took up an education course. She had a short story writing class under Paz Márquez-Benítez and in 1927, she got invited to write a column for the Philippines Herald Magazine.

In the same year, she was among those who founded The Literary Apprentice, the UP Writers’ Club’s publication. Her short story written for this was called “A Christmas Tale”. She writes under the pseudonym, Mina Lys.

As for her final year of college, she jumped to UST to finish her Education degree and was assigned to become the literary editor of the Varsitarian to which her outputs were written under the said pseudonym mentioned above which has a romantic significance to her.

She had her master’s and doctorate degree while teaching literature courses at UST and her dissertation that gained the highest rating of sobresaliente is “Philippine Literature in English: Old Voices and New”.

Latorena died on October 19, 1953. She was 45 years old.
