The Cebu-based cage squad SWU Cobras target history to become the first non-Metro Manila team to ever win the annual tournament featuring different champion basketball team across the Philippines.
The Cobras have been the surprise entry in the competition which celebrates its 12th season as the team defeated the well-funded La Salle Green Archers during their semi-finals face off last week.
According to Yoyoy Alcobesa, the SWU Cobras have their own program and supporters but compared to the teams in Metro Manila, it is really hard to compete. Alcoseba also recalls that he already lost one of his tough guys, the talented Cameroonian Ben Mbala, who left for La Salle last year.
The UAAP Champion coach Juno Sauler of La Salle on his part, stated that he wasn’t surprise with the provincial teams particularly the SWU Cobras.
La Salle and SWU Cobras forged a title duel after they won two of their games in the round-robin semis. The Archers made it to the finals after they win over NCAA titlist San Beda with the final score at 64-60, while the SWU scored a finals berth after they defeated the FEU Tamaraws on Thursday (86-71).
