Small Volcanic Eruption Possibly Occur In Southwest Tip Of Iceland
ICELAND – A small volcanic eruption may possibly occur on the southwestern tip of Iceland about 30 kilometers from the capital Reykjavik.
The Icelandic Met Office said that tremors signaling a potential eruption were spotted near Mount Keilir, which was inactive for the past 800 years, according to a report from ABS-CBN News.
A 5.7-magnitude earthquake was recently registered in the area last week.
“The magma is fracturing and it is so close to the surface… that we have to take it seriously,”
This came from Freysteinn Sigmundsson, a geophysicist at the University of Iceland, who also said that while an eruption is possible, it may not be certain as the situation can last for hours or even longer with many small earthquakes.
The police have cut off roads around the mountain, said photographer from Agence France-Presse near the area.
The Keflavik International Airport and the small fishing port of Grindavik are a few kilometers away from the said area. Despite that, the said area in the immediate vicinity is uninhabited and no evacuation was announced.
“In case of an eruption, we are expecting a small one, where lava is flowing. We are not expecting a large, explosive eruption. The impact on atmosphere, flights and living conditions of people will be minimal,”
Based on the report, the region has been under surveillance due to an unusual number of smaller tremors ever since the quake on February 24, which was felt in the capital city of Reykjavik, and large parts of the country,
