Suspect Throws Grenade At House Of Mayor Of Jaen Town, Nueva Ecija
JAEN TOWN – An unknown suspect threw a grenade at the residence of the mayor of Jaen town, Nueva Ecija before Saturday morning.
According to a report from GMA News, a CCTV footage showed that two suspects riding in tandem on a motorcycle passed in front of Jaen Mayor Sylvia Austria.
The back rider then threw something at the gate, followed by the suspects hurriedly fleeing away from the residence.
When morning came, residents saw the grenade and informed authorities.
The grenade was eventually recovered by the authorities. Fortunately the pin was still attached, which explained why it did not explode. Further probe was still ongoing.
Last year, two explosions from an improvised explosive device rocked the municipal hall gate in the said town, based on the report.
There was also a confrontation last month at the same hall between the supporters of Austria and Antonio Esquivel.
Austria was hailed the winner in the May 2019 elections but she stepped down from office in December after the Regional Trial Court Branch 87 handed down a decision favoring Esquivel’s election protest.
However, the Commission on Elections (Comelec) second division issued a status quo ante-order reinstating Austria as the current mayor.
Esquivel did not accept the order and the resolution of the Sangguniang Bayan recognizing Austria as the duly elected mayor.
