Almost 5 Million Filipino Employees Lost Their Jobs Due to COVID-19 Pandemic’s Impact to Economy, DOLE Says

The Department of Labor and Employment reported that almost 5 million Filipino employees have lost their jobs due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

On Thursday (February 4, 2021), Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello III reported that the coronavirus pandemic affects the jobs of around 5 million Filipino workers. He said that employees who were temporarily dismissed from job have to be rehired after six months.

“As of December, umaabot lang po ng mga around a little less than 5 million, Kaunti talaga kasi kagaya ng sinabi ko meron ‘yung about 3 million natanggal pero temporary. Under the law, after six months they have to be rehired,” Bello said.

Both employers and employees have agreed to extend the period of the lay-off to another six months amid the health crisis in the country. The Trade Union Congress of the Philippines asked the government to give assistance for displaced employees.

“Napakahalaga po ng tulong na cash susbidy mula sa gobyerno. Makakatulong ito sa mangagawa na makabili ng mga basic commodities na kinakailangan nila,” TUCP spokesperson Alan Tanjusay said.

Tanjusay explained that the inflation continues to accelerate for the last quarter of 2020. The increasing prices of fuel and meat products also contribute to the continuous acceleration of the inflation.

The Labor Department is also planning for another wage subsidy but for employers by shouldering 25 to 50 percent of their workers’ salary.
