Medical Expert Say There’s No Issue With Duterte Getting Vaccine Shot In Butt
DUTERTE VACCINE SHOT ISSUE – Recently, Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque said Duterte wanted to get a vaccine shot in his buttocks.
For some, this statement was clearly made in jest. However, some took offense to it saying President Rodrigo Duterte isn’t taking the vaccination seriously.
However, a medical expert emphasized that there shouldn’t be an issue if ever Duterte wanted to go through with the vaccination. According to an article from ABS-CBN, Dr. Edsel Salvaña, member of the technical advisory group of IATF said:
“Any muscle should be fine. Any big muscle. Whether it’s the arm or the butt, it should work“…
Theoretically, you can use it on the butt. But unless there’s some reason you have little muscle on the arm, the arm is fine
Salvaña, the director of the Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology at the University of the Philippines National Institutes of Health explained that vaccines were created “in such a way you want to put it in an area where the body can recognize them and have a good immune response”.
However, he noted how the buttocks shouldn’t really be routinely considered as a vaccination site, especially for children and infants. Furthermore, to avoid injuring the sciatic nerves, vaccination through the buttocks are not generally used in adults.
But, if an individual wanted to get the vaccination there, “the site selected should be well into the upper, outer mass of the gluteus maximus and away from the central region of the buttocks”, Salvaña said.
During a press briefing Tuesday, Roque said Duterte needs to get vaccinated in private as he wanted to be injected in the buttocks.
“Sabi nga niya dahil sa puwet siya magpapasaksak, hindi pupuwedeng public“
