Sinas Reports 4 PISTON Members Arrested For Protesting In Quezon
4 PISTON MEMBERS ARRESTED – Members of the transport group PISTON were arrested along Memorial Circle in Quezon City.
According to NCRPO Chief Debold Sinas, the PISTON members waved their flag and symbol while holding up placards. During an online briefing recorded by DZMM, the police chief stated:
Ito pala, may placard siyang PISTON, may placard siyang PISTON, nandoon.. So ginamit nila yung jeep, lahat ng jeep na nagdaan ay huhulihin po.
PISTON joined with several groups concerned about the Terror Law and the lack of COVID-19 response in a protest during President Duterte’s 2020 State of the National Address (SONA). However, the PNP previously emphasized that protesters would be arrested during the SONA.
Here are the photos of the transport group minutes before their arrest as they gathered along East Avenue, QC before heading towards UP Diliman to join the SONA 2020 protest posted by CNN.
Because of the incident, several netizens expressed their concern and questioned what laws the PISTON members violate. Previously, jeepney drivers who were members of PISTON were also arrested as they staged a protest at the corner of EDSA northbound lane and Concepcion Street.
The drivers called for the government to allow jeepneys back on the road as several areas have already lowered quarantine protocols from an Enhanced Community Quarantine to a General Community Quarantine.
However, much like what happened today, the police were relentless in silencing the cries of those calling for help. Furthermore, there are still no concrete plans regarding allowing jeepneys to operate.
