Salceda Says ABS-CBN Closure Will Lead To More COVID-19 Infections

ABS-CBN – Filipino politician and the current Rep. of Albay’s 2nd District Joey Salceda said ABS-CBN’s closure will lead to more COVID-19 infections in the country.

On Tuesday evening, the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) issued a cease and desist order to the largest tv network in the county, ABS-CBN. The media network went off-air after TV Patrol.

Its loyal viewers and employees took to their social media accounts to express their sentiments about the Kapamilya network’s shutdown. Celebrities like Coco Martin, Judy Ann Santos, and Angel Locsin expressed their concern about the 11,000 workers who lose their job amid the COVID-19 crisis.

According to the report, the lawmaker said Pinoys spend hours in front of their television. Amid the quarantine protocols, their tv time may increase by 5%. He said NTC allegedly worsen the situation of the country.

“Minodel namin ito based on the time spent on TV, basically how many people get the information on TV entertainment, based on the market share of ABS-CBN…15.1 million Filipinos will lose their primary source of information…”

“The NTC behavior essentially is aggravating this threat to our national health,” he added.

Based on the report, Rep. Joey Salceda described the agency’s move as “surreal” because they have issued a provisional authority (PA) on the previous occasion. He said they have been trying to save the Filipino’s jobs amid the pandemic but this happened.

“This is not a step in the right way. Ang gusto ng stimulus, ng kongreso, is to save as much jobs as possible para we spend less to create one more job for those who have lost them,” Salceda said.

On Wednesday, May 6, the ABS-CBN network released a statement on NTC’s cease and desist order.
