Duterte 50/50, Unsure With Lifting ECQ After April 30 Says Roque
ENHANCED COMMUNITY QUARANTINE (ECQ) – Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque stated that President Rodrigo Duterte was unsure of lifting the ECQ.
Due to the coronavirus outbreak in the Philippines, President Rodrigo Duterte imposed an Enhanced Community Quarantine on Luzon. Furthermore, this was extended until April 30, 2020.
However, due to the continued rise of COVID-19 cases and resident’s lack of discipline, this might be extended further. According to an article from GMA, Roque stated that Duterte was 50/50 on further extending the quarantine.
But, he emphasized that the President wants to make a decision regarding that matter this week.
Ang sabi niya nais na niyang magdesisyon itong linggong ito dahil kinakailangang paghandaan anuman ang kanyang desisyon
(He said that he wants to make a decision this week because issues like these require preparation before making any kind of decision.)
As per the article, Interior Secretary Eduardo Año stated that the Inter-Agency Task Force on COVID-19 is set to deliver the President Recommendations on the ECQ by April 25, Sunday.
Of course, it would be the president who shall decide whether the enhanced community quarantine will be lifted, or modified or partially lifted or even extended,
The enhanced community quarantine in Luzon was implemented on March 17. At first, the ECQ was scheduled to expire on April 13. However, due to the continued rise in coronavirus cases, Duterte announced on April 7 that the ECQ would be extended until April 30.
Currently, the Philippines has the highest number of COVID-19 cases among ASEAN countries. Furthermore, due to the increase in testings in the country, the numbers are also expected to rise.
