Meaning
Chūnibyō (中二病) which roughly translates to “middle two disease” or more precisely, “middle-school second-year syndrome” or “eighth-grader syndrome, is a Japanese term used to describe teenagers in their early adolescent stage who, at that time, have delusions of grandeur.
Delusions of grandeur or grandiose delusions are a type of delusions which is best described by beliefs that the person is famous, omnipotent, wealthy or very powerful.
In this case, teens are best described to have the desire to stand out that they convinced themselves that they have secret knowledge or more likely, have hidden powers.
How the term came to being
This was coined by Hikaru Ijuin, a radio personality, where he described the somewhat childish aspirations of middle school students like there was some kind of syndrome he had gained.
This has been popularized in various manga and animated shows such as Love, Chunibyo & Other Delusions and The Disastrous Life of Saiki K, where one of its characters believed that he has a hidden power in his right arm.
