Monocots And Dicots – Difference Between The Two

- Seed
- A monocot seed has only one seed leaf that is located inside its coat. These are usually thin since the endosperm, which its purpose is to feed the new plant is not found inside the leaf.

- Germination
- During the germination, the monocot seed produces a single leaf that is long and narrow.
- As for dicots, it produces two seedleacves. These leaves are able to contain the food, hence, they are usually fatter.
- Leaves
- The adult leaves on a monocot plant are usually long and narrow with veins in straight lines up and down to the leaf and are sometimes parallel to each other.
- On dicots, these comes in many various shapes and sizes. The veins go from the center midrib up to the edge of the leaf.
- Stem and Roots
- For monocots, the stems are unbranced and fleshy and are thinner since these do not thicken from year to year. Their roots are usually short and stingy
- Dicots, on the other hand, have tough stems and can grow wider each year. As for their roots, dicots have a single tap root with smaller roots growing from it.
- Flower
- A monocot’s flower have parts that are in threes. Its sepals are usually of the same color, making it look like it has six.
- Dicots, on the other hand. have flower parts in fours or fives
- Seedpod
- Seed pods in a monocots have three parts and are usually large and fleshy
- Dicot seedpods are various in shape, size and texture.
