Woman W/ Disability Prohibited To Enter BIR For Wearing Shorts
WOMAN – A woman with no legs was prohibited to enter the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) for wearing shorts.
Government offices usually require their clients to wear proper attire when entering the premises. There is a dress code for both men and women.
Clients wearing sleeveless, slippers, or shorts will not be allowed to enter any offices owned by the government. However, there might be an exception to Persons with Disability (PWD).
Based on a report from ABS-CBN News, a Filipina PWD named Nancy Torrelino Boroc felt she was mistreated by a security guard at the Bureau of Internal Revenue in Calbayog City. She said the guard did not allow her to get inside the office because she was just wearing shorts.
Boroc was born without feet so she has been wearing shorts since then. The guard blocked her and told she was not following their dress code. The PWD took to the social media to express her reaction to the security guard last Tuesday, August 6.
According to the report, Boroc went to the same BIR office one week before her issue with that guard. She said the other guard just let her get inside the premise with no complaints about her shorts.
“Pumunta po kami BIR, naka shorts po [ako] just to ask if ano ‘yong requirements… Nakapasok kami and smooth po ang transaction. Ibang guard po ang naka-duty that time,” she said.
When she came back the following week, she got confused about why the other guard did not allow her to enter the government office anymore.
Based on the report, one of the colleagues of the security guard apologized to Boroc. She also said she posted about the incident to let other PWD know that there is a possibility that it may happen to them too.
“I want to let people know situations like these exist at nararanasan ng PWDs sa labas,” Boroc said.
