Washing your hands is one of the very basic hygiene practice and also one of the most essential. As much as people are probably aware, we use our hands to touch almost everything – phones, door knobs, keys – and contact with people, animals, foods, and surfaces where we can pick up thousands of germs, bacteria, and viruses. These germs and bacteria causes diseases but by hand washing, we can prevent these.

Here are some infectious diseases you can possibly prevent through practicing hand washing:

  • Norovirus – A virus that is contagious where among the most common symptoms are vomiting, nausea, stomach pain, and diarrhea.
  • Flu – This is caused by influenza virus.
  • Conjunctivitis – This is also known as Pink Eye. It can be transmitted from the infected one to another who is not infected at all through close personal contact and air by coughing and sneezing
  • Salmonellosis – The cause bacteria can be found in intestines of animals and people.

  • Mononucleosis – “The Kissing Disease.” This is contagious that you can also acquire one through sharing of drinks or utensils.
  • Hand-Foot-And-Mouth Disease – Typical symptoms of hand, foot, and mouth disease include fever, mouth sores, and a skin rash.
  • Cytomegalovirus – A common virus that could infect almost anyone. Once you got infected, the virus stays in your body for life.
  • Staph – This bacteria can cause skin infection, bacteremia, bone infections, food poisoning, Pneumonia, and Toxic Shock Syndrome.
  • Hepatitis A – This can be prevented through vaccine. It is transmitted person-to-person through the fecal-oral route or consumption of contaminated food or water.

  • Strep throatStreptococcus pyogenes or Astreptococcus bacteria causes this. They can be found in the nose and throat that is spread through close contact.
  • Giardiasis – This is a diarrheal disease from microscopic parasite Giardia.
  • E. coli – This is also known as Escherichia coli that live normally in the intestines. It keeps the digestive tract healthy but some strains causes diarrhea over contaminated food or drink.
