Heavy Weather Flooded Indonesia Claiming 17 Lives
FLOOD IN INDONESIA – The Sumatra Island in Indonesia was flooded after a massive rainfall leaving 17 people dead and thousands out of their homes.
Just a few days after the recent massive 6.8 magnitude earthquake, another disastrous incident was brought by a severe weather to Indonesia.
Due to the heavy rainfall in Sumatra’s Bengkulu province, at least 12,000 people fled their homes in fear of flashfloods and landslides.
This is according to an article from Manila Bulletin. According to the article,
Indonesian Officials reported that many bridges, road and buildings were damaged by the rainfall. It also affected at least nine local districts/towns.
Totality of the rain-brought damage is still vague although flood water in some areas were reportedly alleviating.
Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, Indonesia’s National Disaster Agency’s spokesperson, said that the current recorded extent of damage brought by the disaster could still be updated and may increase.
He also said that flashfloods and landslides could occur again if the rainfall continues to fall strongly.
Another disaster could also be spurred from poor hygiene habits and dirty water. Including skin diseases and respiratory infections.
Kitchens and evacuation areas open for public are also prepared to cater 13,000 people. While, search parties and rescue operations continue to attempt and reach difficult areas with rubber boats.
Meanwhile, 14 phytons – large, nonvenomous snakes – were accidentally let out due to the rising waters in Bogor, Jakarta.
Six of the snakes that measure about 13 feet each were caught while the rest are still out there.
That is all there is to it, at least for now. We’ll post updates as soon as we got them.
