Power Rate Increase Expected for March 2019, Meralco Says

The power distribution company Meralco announced a slight power rate increase on the electricity bill of consumers for March 2019.

The Manila Electric Company sets higher electricity bills due to the higher cost of transmission and other charges.

The increased electricity rate would surely add to the burden of Filipino power consumer struggling with their daily cost of living.

Meralco adds P0.0894 per kilowatt-hour (kwh) increase in overall rates making P10.4067 per kwh to P10.4961 per kwh.

Households consuming 200 kwh would have a total increase of P17.88 on their electricity bills, the power company said.

The Wholesale Electricity Spot Market (WESM) increased charges by P0.5178 per kwh due to the higher electricity demand in Luzon.

The Independent Power Producers (IPPs) power cost also increased slightly by P0.0549 per kwh because of lower average plant dispatch.

The power company also advised the consumers to control their electricity consumption since summer is coming.

Meanwhile, the House of Representatives and the Senate have reconciled their conflict in Senate Bill No. 1950 and House Bill No. 8869 or known as the Murang Kuryente bill.
