Dangerous Crack On Mayon Volcano Found By Phivolcs
The state volcanology agency Phivolcs found a dangerous crack on Mayon Volcano allegedly caused by the continuous flow of lava.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) has found a crack on Mayon Volcano’s crater in the southeast sector. The volcano remains under Alert Level 4.
Phivolcs resident volcanologist based at Ligñon Hill Observatory Ed Laguerta said that the crack found at Mayon’s crater was due to continuous lava flows.
Pyroclastic density currents (PDCs) or locally called as Uson flowed from the crack reaching 4.6 kilometers at the Miisi, 5.2 kilometers at Bonga and 4.2 kilometers at the Basud gullies, which are considered as the farthest area affected.
Laguerta said that a team of scientists is now conducting a survey to determine the critical parameters of the volcano.
He also said that they will conduct another (–foul word(s) removed–)sment after the survey to determine whether the agency will maintain or reduce Mayon Volcano’s alert level.
The volcanologist explained that although the volcano remains silent on its physical aspect for the past few weeks, however, the instruments shows irregularities inside.
“The lower slope of Mayon already recorded a plateau in the graph of our monitoring instruments. This means that the supply of magma is no longer ascending to the upper chamber or the pressure is not massive anymore,” Laguerta said quoted by Philstar.
The seismologist also revealed that the middle slope of Mayon Volcano remained inflated or bulging indicating that magma is still present inside its upper chamber.
