BREAKING NEWS : Magnitude 5.1 Earthquake Strikes Caraga

Breaking News : An earthquake with a Magnitude 5.1 shook places of the Caraga region, PHIVOLCS warned possible aftershocks.

BREAKING NEWS – A Magnitude 5.1 earthquake hit parts of Caraga region yesterday and the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology warned the people of the region of the possible aftershocks.

According to the report of the Philippine Star, the quake event happened at 9:19 in the morning and 24 kilometers in the Northeast of Tandag, Surigao del Sur is where the epicenter was traced.

In Talacogon of Agusan del Sur, it was felt at the Intensity 4, which is considered as moderately strong, while in Surigao City and Socorro of Surigao del Norte, it was at Intensity 3 which is weak and was slightly felt at the Butuan City by Intensity 2.

PHIVOLCS said that people and residents of the place is suggested to look forward for other possible after shocks even though there were no damages done by the quake.

Based on the said report, frequent shaking of the surface of the Philippines is not that unusual because of its geographical location.

For the past weeks, it has been all over the news that a lot of properties has been damaged due to the said tremor that also hit other and different parts of the country.

However, as mentioned on the report, the stated agency is recommending the public to be watchful and observant for other faults at some part of the country could possibly create big earthquakes including the 100 kilometer West Valley Fault.

The West Valley Fault runs Marikina to Laguna and has a possiblity to generate an earthquake with 7.2 in magnitude and the PHIVOLCS had already gave a warning about this matter.

The Japan International Cooperation Agency had conducted a study on 2004 that this kind of earthquake could actually kill up to 34,000 persons and 100,000 people to be injured.
